Which way to Wenhai?

Hi y'all,

Updating the blog is an interesting challenge. The website is in Chinese, so I have to click a few wrong turns to figure out how to navigate through the editing screens. Still can't view the blog.

I'm about an hour from setting off on horseback to the Wenhai Ecolodge. Funny thing is, you can't find it on any of the local maps, and it's not listed in the tourist areas. My first impression of this is that there's no 'good ol' boy' network of people all making money off the venture. The second realization is that I may be doing something truly unique to this area, which will be a great awakening after the very touristy old city of Lijiang. All the old city is nothing but a tourist area. Think about the difference in Gatlinburg today as compared to 40 years ago, and you'll have the tip of the iceberg.

Anyhoo, still need to pack and check out of the hostel, so hopefully I can give an update sometime on the 6th when I return.

Sounds like an amazing adventure, especially getting off the beaten path and seeing and doing things that even the locals don't seem to know much about. I hope the horseback trek was fun and not uncomfortable. Let's hope you left the mules behind and found a thoroughbred instead.:) All's well in Tennessee. Can't wait to hear more about your trip.

Website for Wenhai Ecolodge is : http://www.northwestyunnan.com/wenhai_ecolodge.htm

If you don't have a map, I believe it is the "right" turn at Albuquerque that gets you to the correct destination.

I'm very interested in their energy system. I'll be picking your brain when you get back.

By the way, Gordon, were you aware that the meals were mostly vegetarian at the lodge? Hmmm, that inspires me to think of something outside the bun for lunch.

so is this what it means when you say "You are in the middle of nowhere."?

I'm sure you will have many great memories from this trip. A little different from the last time you were there and you were working?

Have a great time and give my love to Sara Beth.

Thanks for the comments, all!

I've "only" taken over 650 pictures so far, so needless to say there's more to say than this blog is capable of. I'll have plenty of stories when I return, so you've been warned!

The meals turned out to have a lot of pork (lot's of pigs), and turned out to be the best food I've eaten in China.

More info when I get back.
